Overview

wherever.audio is a podcast listening app that runs in Chrome, Safari, Edge, and other modern web browsers. You don’t have to log in to an app store to get Wherever, or sign up for an account. Just press play and start listening.

When you listen to podcasts, Wherever keeps track of your history and progress for each episode. Most people will want this, in order to pick up where they left off. But it can also be turned off in Settings.

Wherever also keeps track of your podcast subscriptions, if you subscribe to any.

No matter what, when you use Wherever, your data stays on your device. Searches and content requests use the network, but other than that, there is no central server.

Last but not least, Wherever is designed with mobile in mind. It can be used on laptops and desktops, but was designed for vertical screens and touch gestures like swiping.

I hope you’ll try Wherever, and love using it. If you do, share it with your friends. Because it’s a Web app, you can share it by sending a link or QR code.

Getting Wherever

Wherever can run pretty much anywhere at the click of a link. To get started, visit wherever.audio.

You can use Wherever on your mobile phone. Because mobile phones already have a browser installed, you can skip the Android and iOS app stores.

Adding Wherever to your home screen

If you use Wherever regularly, you’ll probably want a dedicated icon for it on the homescreen.

This can be done from the browser while visiting wherever.audio. Check this awesome guide from bitcot for the steps. Technical note: Wherever is a “progressive web app” or PWA, which may or may not be interesting. But it pervades the documentation, so now you know.

Updating to the latest version

Wherever installs to your browser when you first load it. Once loaded, it runs locally on your device. It can run disconnected from the Internet if you’ve downloaded content, or follow feeds that point to content on private networks.

When you’re online, wherever periodically checks for a new version and will automatically download the latest version if a newer version exists. You can also explicitly check for new versions by visiting the Info page and swiping down on touchscreens, or refreshing the page on laptops and desktops.

Next Steps

Wherever should be pretty simple and intuitive to use, but there’s a lot of hidden gems in the UI.
